Kiln Wash
To prevent glass from sticking to the stainless steel mold you should coat the mold with either kiln wash or spray on mold release. The photos here show the molds coated with boron nitride. If you use kiln wash, sandblasting or hand sanding the metal first to scratch it will help provide “tooth” for the kiln wash to stick to the metal. Boron nitride will provide the smoothest possible finish. Spray on from about 12” (30 cm) away in smooth even strokes. Avoid getting it on too thick. Several thin coats will ensure the smoothest finish. Trying to apply it too heavy or too quick will cause it to run and leave waves that will show in the glass. Fumes from boron nitride or nasty. It’s best to spray outside and either hold your breath while spraying or use a respirator.
Once you have a good coat on the mold, and handle them carefully to not scratch or smudge the boron nitride, you can use them fired to slump temperatures a dozen or more times without recoating. If the coating starts breaking down, just gently wipe it with a soft dry cloth and spray on another coating.
