WATER FEED
A wet belt sander requires some kind of water supply to keep the belt wet. Some alternatives, in order of efficiency:
DRAIN
You can let the catch basin fill up and remove the drain plug to drain out any water contained or you can install a hose to provide continuous drain. WARNING….. drain into a bucket or catchment basin. Do NOT drain into your household or shop drains. The glass dust and particles of silicon carbide that come of the sanding belt can build up inside a drain and set up solid like concrete. Cleaning out a plugged drain can cost more than you paid for the belt sander.
BELT WEAR
Silicon carbide doesn’t wear down but instead breaks down. As you use the belt, bits of silicon carbide will either break off completely or chip into smaller bits. Some users think they can use worn coarser grit belts as finer grit. WRONG! Belts do not wear down uniformly. As it wears, a 100 grit belt will start to produce a finish like a 200 grit belt but if you use it for a 200 grit finish, you will get a 200 grit surface but one with a good number of 100 grit scratches.
